YOSEMITE RENAISSANCE XXVII PROSPECTUS
Yosemite Renaissance is an annual competition/exhibition which is intended to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of Yosemite. Its goals are to bring together the works of serious contemporary artists that do not simply duplicate traditional representations; to establish a continuum with past generations of Yosemite artists; and to help re-establish visual art as a major interpretive medium of the landscape and a stimulus to the protection of the environment. Historically, the arts have played a very important role in the establishment of our State and National Parks. It is our hope that they can be just as important in future efforts to preserve and protect that heritage.
The Yosemite Renaissance XXVII competition is open to all living artists. Subject matter is limited to recent works on the landscape, environment, wildlife and people of Yosemite or the environment of the Sierra. Both representational and non-representational submissions are accepted. Original artwork may be in any medium including the following: Painting (any medium); Photography/Digital; and Other (All other two- and three-dimensional media, including drawings, pastels, printmaking, textiles, and all 3-dimensional works). Size is limited to works that can be shipped in containers not exceeding maximum U.P.S. dimensions of 130 inches, length and girth combined (girth is the distance around the package). Triptychs or other multi-image pieces (exhibited under one title) should not exceed 48 x 48" and should be framed as a single unit. Each artist is limited to eight entries. No more than two entries from any artist will be included in the exhibit.
Please read this entire prospectus before completing your entry forms. For entry by mail use the .pdf entry form(s)--this form requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can also enter using the online entry form (which requires a credit card OR a PayPal account).
SELECTION & AWARD PROCEDURES
Artists must submit one digital file for each artwork entered. (Up to three digital files may be submitted for each three-dimensional piece.) Please do not submit slides.
1. Preliminary and final selection for inclusion in the exhibit will be made by the jurors from the digital files. Between 35 and 50 pieces will be selected for the exhibition.
2. Artists whose works are selected from the digital files will ship their original works for the exhibition at the Yosemite Museum Gallery. (If the originals differ significantly in appearance from the digital files which were submitted they may be disqualified.)
3. From the original works the independent jurors will select award-winners to be announced on the night of the opening reception (Friday, February 24, 2012).
At least $4,000 in cash awards will be distributed at the discretion of the judges. (Purchase awards may be given as well.)
A special award of $300 will be given to the best piece inspired by Hetch Hetchy that the jurors select to be included in the exhibit (if no pieces inspired by Hetch Hetchy are selected for the exhibit no award will be made).
The Board of Directors of Yosemite Renaissance (consisting of artists, curators and administrators) will make the initial selection of works for the exhibition. Cash award-winners will be selected by independent judges to be announced.
There is a non-refundable entry/handling fee of $15.00 for each entry. Payment must accompany your entry submissions. Your check or money order should be made payable (only in U.S. dollars) to Yosemite Renaissance, Inc. One check may cover several entries from one artist (up to the eight entries allowed per artist).
Entry is by digital files only. No slides. Digital files should be submitted in the form of CDs or DVDs (include all of your entries on a single CD or DVD).
Digital files should be in .jpeg (.jpg) format and no larger than 3 mb per file (we do not recommend that you send files smaller than 250 kb).
For three-dimensional works artists may submit up to 3 digital files per entry to show significant views.
Filenames should start with the artist's last name and include a brief title (Example: Kennedy_Half_Dome_Winter. jpg) Although we will not disqualify anyone for failing to name their files as we request, following these instructions will prevent confusion at our end (if everyone names their files "image1.jpg" there will be confusion when we prepare the images for viewing by the jurors).
