Joel Anderson, The Base of Vernal Falls, photograph, 20 x 24, matted, signed.

After getting a degree in aerospace engineering, I discovered I'd far rather be a photographer than a rocket scientist. I spent the 6 years photographing while on (aerospace) assignments in New Mexico, and finally resigned to become a full-time photographer in 1992. I use either a 1940s era large-format field view camera (with modern lenses) or a medium-format Hasselblad film camera, choosing color or sepia depending on what I'm trying to convey. Images are printed by me in my traditional wet darkroom – boring process but I like the control and results. Digital is great but right now I still feel more connection with the history of the old film cameras and darkroom. I like finding what is hidden or struggling in the noise of modern life, including landscapes, old buildings, and animals.
